AHRC UK - Designing

Designing for the 21st Century
http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/apply/research/sfi/ahrcsi/designing_for_the_21st_century.asp

Introduction
Designing for the 21st Century is a joint initiative between the AHRC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It has a budget of £6.5m and will run from 2005 to 2009. By working together, the AHRC and the EPSRC hope to encourage applicants from across the remits of both funding bodies to work collaboratively and foster understanding of the different perspectives of design research. The initiative itself aims to support leading-edge design research which will explore new modes of design thinking suitable for the challenges of designing for 21st Century society.

Current Funding Opportunities
The AHRC and EPSRC are now inviting applications for research project grants under the second phase of this initiative. Applications are welcome which are structured in the most appropriate form to deliver the research objectives identified in the project proposal. It is anticipated that this call will be highly competitive and the available budget will allow up to 20 awards to be supported. The call will support a portfolio of research projects of between 12 and 24 months in duration, and for between £20,000 and £400,000 (fEC).
The closing date for the receipt of applications is 4pm on 6 April 2006.

Design Dialogues
The 21st century has seen rapid advances in almost every aspect of our lives. With our lifestyles, and our demands, changing so quickly, new design disciplines are being created, and new roles for designers are becoming apparent.

With funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) researchers involved in the Designing for the 21st Century, have been finding ways to tackle this issue.

Over the past year, designers, engineers, architects and even a top chef, have been taking part in design clusters, aiming to stimulate new ways of design thinking and support leading-edge design research that is self-reflective, socially aware, and internationally significant. These research clusters will be sharing their findings at a special event at the Royal Institute of British Architects on March 7th.
The event will be an opportunity for academics, design practitioners, engineers, software developers and architects, among others, to learn more about the findings of the research clusters, and to discover how the Designing for the 21st Century initiative will develop over the next three years.

"By bringing together experts working in the domains of both AHRC and EPSRC, it has been possible to develop understanding of the different perspectives of design research," explains Professor Tom Inns, Director of the Initiative. "Design is a vital source of competitive advantage for UK enterprise. It contributes to the country's wealth creation, affects social inclusion, and impacts on people's quality of life. The insights which have been generated from these research clusters will help us all deal with many of the challenges and opportunities that await us in the 21st century."

The call for applications for Research projects will be issued in the next month, and the deadline for applications is 4pm on Thursday, April 6th 2006. Further information about how to apply will be available from www.ahrc.ac.uk/design21.

Design Economies

Design Economies

http://www.massivechange.com/
Design has emerged as one of the world's most powerful forces. It has placed us at the beginning of an new period of human possibility, where all economies and ecologies are becoming global, relational, and interconnected.

Design Economies

An economy is a system of exchange. We explore paradigm-shifting
events, ideas, and people, investigating the capacities and ethical
dilemmas of design in such systems as:

MaterialsBuild intelligence into materials and liberate form from matter
LivingDesign evolution
MovementEnable sustainable mobility

Culture-Driven Innovation
Sohrab Vossoughi, President, ZIBA Design

Lenovo, the largest Chinese PC maker, has become a global competitor. Several years ago, to understand a new way of innovation, they engaged ZIBA Design. Two years later, ZIBA's design team had flown over 100,000 miles, worked through the SARS epidemic, prayed at a Buddhist temple, commuted in Chinese cities on bikes, and lived in Chinese households. Through understanding and insight, ZIBA delivered a series of culture-driven innovations that created new product lines and changed a company.

Insight, Confidence, and Commitment in Team Decision-Making
Robert Rasmussen, Principal, Robert Rasmussen and Associates

This session will explore how scientifically-based experiential learning can get at the heart of team challenges that are difficult to articulate, and provide a leadership model that emphasizes team decision-making. Participants will learn how to create a constructive space in which differences can be voiced and acknowledged, and to draw from mental images and deep feelings to help their team make effective decisions with confidence and commitment.

Foresight, Innovation and Design
Tony Kim, Ph.D., Professor, Chair of Design Management Dept., IDAS, Hongik University

Designers are said to create the immediate future by inventing new styles from what is “contemporary.” However, in this fast-changing era of shorter product lifecycles, “contemporary” is not enough: the future needs be integrated into the product design process. An overall design philosophy that includes interaction and information design can bring coherence to a company’s offerings. Professor Kim will present Korean case histories to show how the future can be created by integrating foresight methodology into design approaches.

New products are engines to growth and profitability for many companies, including Procter & Gamble (P&G). In this article, the authors explore the drivers of new product performance with a particular focus on P&G's best practices. The "Innovation Diamond" is used as an integrative and guidingframework to help management focus on what's important to success: Innovation strategy, a solid idea-to-launch process, portfolio management, and the right climate and leadership.

Business Thinkers 50_ 2005

Des Dearlove & Stuart Crainer introduce the Thinkers 50 - the 2005
global ranking of business thinkers.

Who is the most influential living management thinker?
That was the simple question that inspired the original Thinkers 50 in 2001.
A lot of hard work and number-crunching later,
the answer became the first global ranking of business gurus.

The Thinkers 50 2005 provides a completely new ranking.
Produced by Suntop Media in association with the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), it is the definitive bi-annual guide to which thinkers and ideas are in - and which have been consigned to business history.
